Nick McKenna (Burt Reynolds) walks into the police station bathroom looking exhausted. Devon Butler (Norman D. Golden II), the kid he’s reluctantly partnered with, is already at the sink brushing his teeth.


DEVON:

(cheerfully, through foamy toothpaste)

Hey, Nick!


NICK:

(grumbling)

Kid, this is the bathroom. Not time for chatting.


Nick walks over to the urinal and starts doing his business. Devon, curious and still full of energy, stops brushing for a second and walks toward him.


DEVON:

You ever play swords?


NICK:

(confused)

What?


DEVON:

You know—swords!


Devon giggles and steps up to the urinal next to Nick, clearly not respecting personal space. He starts peeing—and suddenly, there’s a splash on Nick’s pant leg.


NICK:

(disgusted)

Hey! What the hell, kid?!


DEVON:

(grinning sheepishly)

Oops. Sorry.


Nick glares down at his wet shoe and then up at Devon, who’s trying to suppress a laugh.


NICK:

Kid, if you weren’t a witness, I’d arrest you for assault.


DEVON:

Come on, lighten up! That was kinda funny.


NICK:

I’m wearing leather shoes, for God’s sake!

This scene was meant to be comic relief, but it left many viewers cringing instead of laughing. It’s one of those “how did this make the final cut?” moments in early ‘90s family films.
