Bad Lads Army: Officer Class – The Turning Point of David Johnston
David Johnston wasn’t your average recruit. With a reputation as an unruly “outlaw” back home—run-ins with authority, a short fuse, and a bad habit of ignoring rules—he was a prime candidate for Bad Lads Army, the reality TV show designed to reform troubled young men through a simulation of 1950s British National Service.
From the moment he stepped onto camp soil, Johnston hated it. The cold baths, the barked orders, the strict schedules—none of it suited him. Still, something inside him kept pushing forward. Perhaps it was pride. Or maybe, deep down, he knew he needed a change.
The Hygiene Inspection
Four weeks into training, the squad was called to attention for a full hygiene and uniform inspection. It was a grey morning, and the recruits were lined up in the drill hall, backs straight, kilts pressed, boots shining—at least in theory.
Sergeant Rae, a man built like a bulldozer with eyes that could pierce steel, paced the line. He checked ears, inspected teeth, tugged at collars, and scowled at the slightest scuff on a boot. He expected perfection—or close to it.
When he reached Johnston, Rae paused.
He sniffed the air. His nose twitched.
“Corporal Murrae,” Rae said firmly. “Front and center.”
Corporal Murrae jogged over and stood to attention.
“Smell him,” Rae ordered.
Murrae leaned in toward Johnston and recoiled slightly. His face twisted in disgust.
Rae’s voice dropped into a dangerous tone. “This is what you call hygiene in your section, Corporal? I’m ashamed of you.”
Murrae turned red with embarrassment and fury. “Permission to deal with him, Sergeant?”
“Granted,” Rae snapped. “Make sure he learns. And I want results.”
Discipline Delivered
Outside the hall, Johnston felt the full force of Murrae’s fury.
“You absolute disgrace,” Murrae growled. “You humiliated me—and worse—you let your section down. Do you think this is a joke?”
“No, Corporal,” Johnston said quickly, eyes lowered.
“You’re filthy, you’re lazy, and you’re dragging the rest of the lads down with you. You think being fast in the bath is good enough? In the army, fast doesn’t mean clean.”
Murrae made him jog back to the washroom, where he was ordered to strip to his shorts and thoroughly wash in cold water—this time properly. Murrae stood nearby, inspecting every step. Soap. Scrub. Rinse. No cutting corners.
“You do it right, or you do it again. Understand?”
“Yes, Corporal!”
Afterwards, Johnston stood at attention, still shivering.
“You’ve got one shot, Johnston. One. From now on, you rise with the rest. You bathe with the rest. You lead by example—not by shame.”
A Shift in Mindset
Something changed in Johnston that day. Maybe it was pride. Maybe it was guilt. Maybe it was the idea that for once, he was part of something bigger than himself—and he had let it down.
The next morning, he was first out of bed, first in the washroom, and first dressed for inspection. His bunk was squared away perfectly. His boots gleamed. He even started helping the slower lads clean up their corners.
Corporal Murrae noticed.
Over the following weeks, Johnston became a standout. He pushed himself harder during drills. He volunteered for extra duties. He stopped backtalking and started listening.
He even earned a commendation from Sergeant Rae during a team-building exercise.
“Private Johnston,” Rae said, pacing past. “Didn't expect much from you at the start. But you’ve proven me wrong. Well done.”
Johnston stood taller than he ever had before.
The Final Parade
When the final inspection arrived, Johnston was no longer “the lad who couldn’t be bothered.” He was polished, prepared, and proud. His section stood taller with him leading from the center. Corporal Murrae gave him a nod of approval.
Later, as they all stood in line for the closing ceremony, Johnston looked back on the moment he almost threw it all away because of a skipped bath. It was a small thing—but in the army, the small things mattered.
He had learned discipline. Responsibility. Respect.
And it all started with a cold bath—and a lesson well taught.
Would you like to continue Johnston’s story after the show or explore the journey of another recruit? I can help you expand this into a multi-part story if you’d like!
